ARTIST STATEMENT: For more than 30 years, Rick Petrea has chiefly worked as a figurative / expressionistic artist with forays into abstraction. Throughout his expansive career his influences have been Willem de Kooning, Dubuffet, The CoBrA Group, comic books, and outsider works by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Rather than producing academically correct renderings, Petrea chooses to “undraw” making “child-like marks”, which results in an honesty, authenticity, and expressive power typically conveyed in art brut.

ARTIST BIO: Rick Petrea is a mixed media painter, sculptor, ceramic, and collage artist from Savannah, GA. He has exhibited throughout the United States as well as internationally in countries such as Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, France, Italy, Turkey, Austria, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Petrea holds an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He also studied at Armstrong State University and the University of Georgia. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Le Prix de Peinture du Centenaire, Musee des Duncan, Paris, France.
